Christmas Cards

‘Tis the season to be Bentling

As the holiday season approaches, we’ve raided the archives of the W O Bentley Memorial Foundation to give you a flavour of the colourful and varied ways in which the Bentley world has marked the occasion down the years. We start with a real rarity, a copy of the actual card sent out by Bentley Motors Ltd in 1927. Also included is the earliest known appearance of the subject in a BDC publication, New Year greetings published in the first BDC Gazette of 1939 (though given the date the wishes for peace on earth and goodwill to all men proved somewhat wide of the mark). After World War II post-war restrictions resulted in cards which matched the sobriety of the times, but by the 1960s and 1970s the Club regularly featured the work of such distinguished motoring artists as Terence Cuneo, Roy Nockolds, F Gordon Crosby and Michael Turner, often commemorating momentous events in Bentley history. While earlier cards featured the W O era cars which were then at the heart of the Club, in more recent years themes have varied between humour, paintings of distinguished Bentleys and superb photographs of cars of all generations including the Derby cars of the 1930s and Crewe-built cars up to the latest Continental GTs, emphasising that the BDC is very much a club for all Bentley owners. This is the theme of the 2016 card, photographed in the magnificent forecourt of Blenheim Palace, not far from the Wroxton HQ of the Club and the Foundation. (And a gentle reminder to Club members who haven’t yet written their cards: this years cards can be ordered here:
